Measure Twice Cut Once
There is no freedom felt as when you have confidence that your fellowship with God is intact. Joy and freedom are the result of obedience. Your mind is at rest (Isaiah 32:17). There is no tension. There are no tracks to cover and no stories to keep straight.
I like to build things. My dad always said, “Measure twice, cut once. You can’t put it back on.” Measuring your life is the same. If you miss the mark you can lead yourself astray. If you try to get as close as you can to the line between sin and holiness your measurement will be off.
Mark 4:22-24 (NASB)
For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” And He was saying to them, “Take care what you listen to. By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides.
Trying to be right with God, trying to manage your reputation, and trying to manage sin is not the same as just surrendering all to the Lord and walking in obedience.
Daniel 5:27 (NASB)
...you have been weighed on the scales and found deficient.
Some try to maintain some resemblance of their old life. They don’t want to fully let go of it. Like the rich young ruler, they weigh walking with God against what they will lose. He walked away sad when Jesus told him what he must do. God’s mercy is abundant and He is always at your side ready to take over. You cannot withhold anything from Him. He will not bend to our ways nor overlook our sin. If you’re going to follow Him you can’t look back.
Luke 9:62 (NASB)
But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
So be honest with yourself about what is going on in your life. Measure your life and make sure your measurements are true and correct. You can say anything you want about your life but would God agree? The only opinion that matters is His.
Focus on walking in the Spirit. Sin is not what we are to focus on. We do need to be aware of its presence and turn from it in repentance. However, our emphasis should be placed on knowing what is the fruit of the Spirit and walking in it.
It's never too late to adjust your heart to God.
