Fork in the Road
1 Corinthians 2:11 (NASB)
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him?
Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.
We have a Helper. God sends Him to those who believe in the name of Jesus. The Spirit of God Himself. John 14:17 tells us He will be in us. If the Spirit knows the thoughts of God, how important is it that we are in tune to Him? Frequently, we have a choice to make.
John 14:17
that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
Nothing can separate us from the love of God or from His forgiveness but there are times when you can be out of tune with His Spirit. Sin brings death to your joy and peace.
Romans 8:6
For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,
John 10:29
My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and
no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
1 Corinthians 3:1-3
And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?
Romans 8:38
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We can rest knowing that nothing can separate us from God's love but there are times when that reality is not your current experience. Times of stress and bewilderment, anxiety or depression, cannot be categorized as peaceful. So, if the Spirit of Peace resides within you then there must be a reason for the absence of joy and peace. The reason is sin. In 1 Corinthians 3 Paul tells the church in Corinth that they have shifted out of their spiritual nature and into their old sinful selves as before they became a "new creation." It happens to us today.
We are a Spiritual people—sometimes. When you are in your flesh God will let you have it. Repentance is the answer to reconnecting with His Spirit, your Helper. Forgiveness and cleansing are available to all who ask. He wants to guide you and remind you of things He taught you but He won't if you are not obeying His voice and following Him. Not trusting Him is an offense to God. It is sinful not to receive the peace Jesus came to give. If Jesus says "My peace I give to you," and you reject that peace, then sin must be present or you would be experiencing His peace.
Being in tune to the Helper who knows the thoughts of God is a key element in the relationship. I have found out numerous times that He is God and I am not. The New Testament teaches us that there are actions we must take to pursue holiness. Spiritual autopilot has a risky destination. Repentance is necessary to regain fellowship with Him when you have gone your own way. Your loyalty to Him should be reviewed moment by moment. He empowers the humble. Humble yourself to Him and He will lift you up. What must you do to adjust? Trust Him, He knows where you're going.
1 Peter 5:6-7 (NASB)
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
John 16:13
But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
