Servant Leadership
But whoever would be great among you must be your servant…even as the Son of Man (Jesus) came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:25-28
Jesus explained to His followers that their practice of leadership was to be distinctly different than the
self-seeking, self-serving, and domineering style of leadership often found in the world: "Whoever would be first among you must be servant of all" (Mk 10:42-44; Mt 20: 25-28).
So many seek power, authority and recognition in society today, just as sinful humanity has done since the beginning of time.
Leadership, whether in homes, companies, and even in some churches often focuses not on loving, caring for and serving others, but instead is more focused on self gratification, elevation of self and domineering others.
This is not the model Jesus displayed nor is it what He expects from us. It is the road to decay and destruction in marriages, families, churches and companies.
Jesus modeled servant leadership for us so that we could learn the right way, the way that leads to harmony, happiness and growth.
His life and teachings show us how important it is to lead with humility, compassion, and a servant's heart.
Servant leadership is a Biblically based approach to leadership where the leader puts the needs of others before their own desires and acts as a servant first.
Jesus Christ demonstrated servant leadership by washing His disciples' feet, which was typically the job of the lowest servant in a household. Even though Jesus was God in human form, He humbled Himself to serve His disciples. This act of service showed His humility and love for His followers.
In John 13:14-15, Jesus said, "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you."
God’s word, the Bible has much to say on this, so read what God says, begin putting it into practice in every area of your life and watch the amazing things that begin to happen!
